Axar Patel finally turns up in IPL 2026 but BCCI hands him fine after PBKS vs DC clash

For the first time in IPL 2026, Axar Patel looked like Axar Patel the batter again. And Delhi Capitals desperately needed it. After enduring one of the worst batting phases of his IPL career, the DC captain finally produced something incredible with the bat, smashing a match-winning 56 off just 30 deliveries against Punjab Kings (PBKS) in Dharamsala.

The innings not only kept Delhi alive in the playoff race but also showed why Axar has long been regarded as one of the most valuable multi-dimensional cricketers in T20 cricket. But within hours of the win, the BCCI punished the Delhi skipper.

BCCI fines Axar Patel for slow over-rate offence

On Tuesday morning, the IPL confirmed that Axar Patel had been fined INR 12 lakh after Delhi Capitals maintained a slow over-rate during their thrilling three-wicket victory over Punjab Kings.

The sanction came under Article 2.22 of the IPL Code of Conduct related to minimum over-rate offences. “As this was his team’s first offence of the season under Article 2.22 of the IPL’s Code of Conduct, which pertains to minimum over-rate offences, Axar Patel was fined Rs 12 lakhs,” the IPL said in an official statement.

“Delhi Capitals (DC) Captain Axar Patel has been fined after his team maintained a slow over rate during Match No. 55 of TATA Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 against Punjab Kings (PBKS) at the Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association Stadium, Dharamshala.”

Slow over-rates penalty in IPL

The BCCI now aims for matches to finish within 3.5 hours, including both innings and breaks. If the bowling team does not start the 20th over by the scheduled time, they must bring an extra fielder inside the 30-yard circle (allowing only four fielders outside) for the remainder of the innings.
