County Cricket face massive crisis as IPL and PSL 2025 clash with county schedule

Country Cricket is en route to face a massive crisis. The clash of the Indian Premier League (IPL) and Pakistan Super League (PSL) next season could potentially see more than 30 players missing out on county cricket. Another cause of concern? more and more home grown players will be based entirely on white-ball cricket.

In 2025, the Pakistan Super League is slated to take place from 7th April to 20th May. This will be in direct clash with the Indian Premier League. PSL 2025 will be delayed from it’s usual norm of taking place in February. This is owing to the ICC Champions Trophy which will be hosted by Pakistan.

English cricketers have been in high demand in both IPL and PSL over the last 3 years. With PSL and IPL dates clashing, it is country cricket who are the worst sufferers. The two T20 leagues would be directly clashing with the opening 2 months of County Cricket.

“There is a huge demand for English T20 talent around the world. Without objection from counties, it would be realistic to think anywhere upwards of 30 English players could be signed or drafted to IPL and PSL squads in 2025,” said Ben Jones, an analyst for CricViz who has worked with Islamabad United in the PSL and Delhi Capitals in the IPL to The Telegraph.

Over the last 3 years, a total of 45 English players have featured in both IPL and PSL. It remains to be seen what the ECB decides. Every player participating in these T20 leagues need to obtain NOC from ECB before joining the franchise sides.
