KEY HIGHLIGHTS

  • RCB jumped to 4th spot in IPL 2022 points table with a win over Gujarat Titans on Thursday.
  • The Bengaluru franchise will be replaced by Delhi Capitals if Rishabh Pant's men beat Mumbai Indians on Saturday.
  • Faf du Plessis admitted that he will be supporting DC against MI in that fixture.

Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) put themselves in playoffs contention by defeating Gujarat Titans (GT) in their final league game of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 season. However, RCB's qualification isn't entirely in their own hands, with Mumbai Indians required to beat Delhi Capitals in order for Faf du Plessis & Co. to sail through.

While RCB are occupying 4th spot in the points table, DC would topple them if they defeat MI in their final league phase fixture. Having done the job his franchise could against the Titans, Du Plessis admitted that he is backing Mumbai to beat Delhi and do Bengaluru a favour.

"Tonight was really important for obvious reasons. You want to finish the competition strong and show that you are a group of people that has character within the dressing room. I think the worst thing for us that could have happened tonight was putting in a soft performance. That was really important for me to see from us as a group today and control what's in our hands," said Faf at the post-match presentation ceremony.

RCB were in control of their own fate only a few games ago, looking strong to even challenge for a top 2 position. However, Defeats against Punjab Kings, Gujarat Titans and Rajasthan Royals impacted their campaign to a large extent. Now, the team can't do much but hope for MI to emerge triumphant against DC.

"Probably one or two inconsistent performances put us in the position we are today but it was really important for us tonight. We have a couple of blue hats in our dressing room for the next couple of days and I'm banking on Rohit to go big," said Du Plessis.

The South African also lauded Virat Kohli who stormed back to form with a Player of the Match performance against Gujarat. Kohli scored 54-ball 73 to take RCB over the line.

"I'm very happy for Virat. He's been working hard in the nets, trying to get through a tough patch and great to see him strike it like the Virat we know. I understand that it's the fired-up personality and character that gets him going, so I play the role with him.

"It's really fun to bat out there when he's going like that because he's got so much emotion it builds with you. It feels like you're ready to go and play a rugby match with all the energy going through you. It was really fun," he said.
