Sunrisers Hyderabad shook off their two-match losing streak to end Rajasthan Royals' consecutive 4-match winning streak in IPL 2024, clutching victory from the jaws of defeat.
Choosing to bat first, SRH did not get off to the start they are known for and lost Abhishek Sharma early and cheaply to finish with their lowest powerplay total of this year's IPL. While Travis Head(58 off 44) held up one end, the show belonged to K Nitish Kumar Reddy(76 off 42). While Reddy helped SRH motor along, it was Heinrich Klaasen(42* off 19) who provided the final push that eventually put them past 200.
SRH started the chase in the most perfect way possible when Bhuvneshwar Kumar(3 for 41) removed both Jos Buttler and Sanju Samson for ducks in the first over of the chase. But, Yashasvi Jaiswal(67 off 40) and Riyan Parag(77 off 49) did not let that deter them from leading the charge. Both were dropped early and made SRH pay for it as they put up 134 in 12.4 overs when T Natarajan(2 for 35) removed Jaiswal. A little over two overs later, SRH captain Pat Cummins(2 for 34) removed Riyan Parag as well to give SRH hope. But Rovman Powell(27 off 15) always kept RR in the hunt, contributing a major chunk as RR scored 15 runs from the 17th over to bring the equation down to 27 runs needed from 18 balls.
T Natarajan returned, and despite being hit for a six first ball, only conceded seven runs off the over and even managed to get the wicket of Shimron Hetmyer. An identical over followed from Pat Cummins where he removed Dhruv Jurel and conceded just seven, including a six off the last ball by Powell, needing RR to chase down 13 from the last over bowled by Bhuvneshwar Kumar. SRH struggled with their fielding in the last over by throwing to the wrong end and conceding easy doubles, until the equation was down to 4 runs needed from 2 balls when Powell and Ashwin ran hard, the former scraped his arm and still completed the two. Kumar then landed a perfect yorker on which Powell was adjudged LBW to leave SRH with a 1-run win.
