A match where 523 runs were scored and records were splintered with no mercy. Yes, Match 8 of IPL 2024 provided just that - with batters going ballistic and bowlers suffering the wrath. Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) batted first courtesy of Mumbai Indians (MI) Hardik Pandya winning the toss and opting to field first, with his decision turning out to be a blessing in disguise, with every batter other than Mayank Agarwal upping the ante, scoring at skyrocketing strike-rates.
Left-handed batters Travis Head (62 off 24) and Abhishek Sharma (63 off 24) went crazy in the initial half and Aiden Markram (42 off 24) and Heinrich Klaasen (80* off 34) followed suit in the next half, with the South Africans putting up 116 runs off 55 deliveries. Jasprit Bumrah was the only bowler who had an acceptable economy rate, with him doing wonderfully well to give just 36 in his full quota, while the 17-year-old debutant, Kwena Maphaka, was dismantled for 66 in his full quota of overs after giving just seven in the first.

It was always going to be a daunting chase for MI. However, the visitors did reasonably well in the powerplay, with them scoring just five runs lesser than what SRH managed in the first six, albeit losing an additional wicket. Rohit Sharma, Ishan Kishan, and newbie Naman Dhir all batted having their strike-rates in excess of 200, but none of them could capitalize on their respective starts.
Playing at his home ground, southpaw Tilak Varma top-scored with a blazing 64 off 34, and the match seemed to be on the brink while he was at the crease. However, MI lost steam once he got dismissed with only 20 runs coming from overs 12 to 15, and a late burst from Tim David and Romario Shepherd couldn't save the day for MI, ultimately falling short by 31 runs.
IPL 2024 Points Table:
SRH's first win of the season brought them right up to the third spot, behind table-toppers CSK and second-placed Rajasthan Royals. After losing both the games they've played thus far, MI dropped to ninth place, with LSG being the only team below them due to an inferior net run-rate.
