So far, five players have been traded by IPL franchises. West Indies’ Romario Shepherd was the first player to be traded, with the 29-year-old moving from Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) to Mumbai Indians (MI).

Here’s all you need to know about the IPL trading window and its rules.

What is the IPL trading window?

The IPL trading window allows franchises to swap players between the teams or acquire players in an all-cash mode. Whatever trade is made requires the approval of the IPL Governing Council. Should there be more than one franchise aiming to acquire the player, the franchise selling the player gets to choose the team the player goes to.

Before the trade of a player, receiving consent from the player is a must for all franchises. It is also to be noted that franchises are barred from trading ‘icon’ players.

The IPL 2024 trade window closes on 26 November at 4 pm IST. Before this deadine, teams will also be required to announce their retention list ahead of the IPL 2024 auction, scheduled to take place in Dubai on 19 December. The remaining purse of the franchises will be determined by the retention list and the players who have been traded.
