Mumbai Indians (MI) have been the most successful franchise in World Cricket. After MI New York won the inaugural Major League Cricket 2023 (MLC 2023), another trophy has been added to the already illustrious cabinet of the MI franchise.

Mumbai Indians and the Indian Premier League’s (IPL) inception go hand in hand. The IPL started in 2008 after India won the 2007 T20 World Cup, and MI was one of the first franchises to buy a team in the T20 event. MI are owned by one of the world’s biggest conglomerates, Reliance Industries. Through the years, the name MI has been synonymous with the Ambani family. Nita Ambani and her two sons, Anant and Akash, are avid watchers of every MI game at the Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai, their home ground.

MI Franchise Presence in Global T20 Leagues

The MI franchise has a team in five different T20 events all over the world. They own the MI Cape Town in SA20, the Mumbai Indians in IPL and WPL (Indian Premier League and Women’s Premier League), the MI Emirates in International League T20 (ILT20), and the MI New York in MLC (Major League Cricket).

How many titles have Mumbai Indians won?

The Mumbai Indians franchise has won a total of 9 titles in five different leagues. They have been the most successful in the Indian Premier League, winning 5 titles. The second most successful league for MI was the now-defunct CLT20 (Champions League Twenty20), where they won two titles in five editions. They also have one title apiece in two new T20 tournaments, the MLC and WPL, winning both titles in 2023.

Mumbai Indians’ IPL Success

Mumbai Indians hold the record for most matches played (248), most matches won (138), and most titles won (5) in IPL history. They also have the second-highest win percentage in the IPL (56.68). They are just behind the Chennai Super Kings (CSK), among teams that have played more than 50 matches.

MI also has a favourable record against their biggest rivals, CSK, winning 20 of their 36 matches. They also hold the record for the best win percentage in the IPL Finals, winning five titles in six appearances.

Mumbai Indians’ record in CLT20

MI is the joint most successful team in CL20’s history, winning 2 titles in 5 seasons. The CLT20 saw teams from different T20 leagues around the globe fight for the ultimate T20 glory.

Teams from India, Australia, England, South Africa, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, New Zealand, and the West Indies all took part in the event. Similar to the IPL, MI’s biggest competitor was CSK, who, just like MI, won two titles in five appearances.

Mumbai Indians dominated 2023 in T20 Cricket

MI saw two of its franchises win the title on their debuts in 2023. Mumbai Indians won the inaugural WPL (Women’s Premier League) in March under the leadership of Indian women’s team skipper Harmanpreet Kaur. In July, MI New York won the title in the inaugural MLC 2023, beating the Seattle Orcas in the final and their rivals, the Texas Super Kings (co-owned by CSK), along the way.
