Cricket Australia on Friday confirmed that the first match of the Big Bash League (BBL 16) will be played at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on December 12. The clash between the Melbourne Renegades and the Perth Scorchers in India will be first overseas fixture in the history of the league. Earlier in may, reports stated that the CA was keen on hosting a BBL fixture in India to explore the lucrative market. Now that the BBL fixture will be held in India, Cricket Australia is also reportedly hoping that an Indian Premier League (IPL) game will be held in Australia as a reciprocal gesture.

BBL 16 opener to be held in Chennai

The announcement regarding the BBL 2026 opening game was made Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Australia PM Anthony Albanese as the two leaders jointly addressed the media at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) on Friday. The game between the Renegades and Scorchers will take place on December 12 at the MZ Chidambaram Stadium from 2.40 PM IST onwards. The opening game of BBL 16 will be live streamed in India by JioHotstar.

The game in Chennai will serve as the Renegades’ first home fixture. Meanwhile, the full schedule for BBL 16 is set to be announced next week. However, the CA is wary of the threat of monsoon in Chennai in December and is exploring options to update the playing conditions and extend the cut-off time should weather intervene. Cricket Australia is also planning to host the opening game of future BBL editions in India if the Australian government approves the same.

ā€œWe know they’re incredibly passionate cricket fans all over India, but particularly in Chennai. Everyone we’ve spoken to has been really optimistic that we should expect a good crowd. What has become clear to us as we’ve built this event out is just how popular the BBL already is in India. It’s got nothing on the IPL, obviously, but the BBL is well-liked and respected,ā€ Alistair Dobson, CA’s executive general manager of Big Bash Leagues, told reporters.

Earlier in May, aĀ report stated that a five-member team from Cricket Australia conducted a recce of the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. BCCI president Mithun Mahnas also had reportedly met the CA officials at the venue.
