BCCI announces India’s next series after T20 World Cup as Rohit-Kohli’s comeback date locked

What’s next in the international calendar for India after the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026? Well, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has finalised an exciting home series against Afghanistan, starting from June 6 onwards. The Rashid Khan-led side will tour India for a one-off Test and a three-match one-day international (ODI) series.

Right after the T20 World Cup 2026, there’s the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026. The T20 carnival will continue and will run until the end of May. However, the international cricket will be back on the calendar then, with India hosting Afghanistan. This series was part of the FTP but the BCCI has confirmed it on Monday.

Return for Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli

Both Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli are being missed by the Indian cricket fans. They no longer play T20Is and Test cricket, with the sole focus being on the ODIs. With India soon shifting their focus on the ODI World Cup 2027, there’d be more one-day cricket. The first series is against a tricky Afghanistan side.

Both Rohit and Kohli will be playing the IPL 2026. So, they won’t be rusty, like they were in the Australia series last year. But the World No. 1 and No. 2 ODI ranked batters will be looking to continue attaining mastery over their art. The three ODIs are lined up on June 14, 17 and 20, with Dharamsala, Lucknow and Chennai scheduled to host them. Among all the venues, only Chennai was part of the T20 World Cup venues.

Historic IND vs AFG Test

Meanwhile, the tour starts with a one-off Test in New Chandigarh, Mullanpur. This will be the first-ever Test at the Maharaja Yadavindra Singh PCA Stadium. Fascinatingly, India and Afghanistan have played just one Test against each other. That clash happened in 2018 at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium, Bengaluru. India were led by Ajinkya Rahane in that game, with Murali Vijay and Shikhar Dhawan scoring centuries. India won the game by an innings and 262 runs, which still remains India’s second biggest win in terms of runs remaining.
