Yet, with a bloated squad, rather than improving, their performance plummeted. The Blues ended last season in 12th place in the Premier League. In their pre-season campaign, they remained unbeaten with 3 wins and 2 draws. They also won the Premier League Summer Series overtaking Newcastle United. They will look to continue this good run with a win in their first game against Liverpool.
Similar to the Blues, Liverpool also ended their season in 5th place last season. Hence, this will be the first time they will not be playing in the Champions League since the year coach Jurgen Klopp joined them. Their decision to not bolster their midfield saw their performance plummet. However, this summer, there has been a huge change in their midfield with 7 midfielders departing and 2 new arrivals, while more are on their own. The Reds registered 3 wins, 1 draw, and 1 defeat in their pre-season campaign.

- Chelsea was handed a double injury blow ahead of their blockbuster Premier League opening game. New arrival Christopher Nkunku and Wesley Fofana will both miss several months of games following their knee surgeries.
- Armando Broja was suffering from a fitness issue while both Noni Madueke and Benoit Badiashile were suffering from hamstring injuries. The trio did not appear in any of their pre-season friendlies. However, they have returned to training and the coach could include them for their match on Sunday.
- Ben Chilwell and captain Reece James could be lining up at the full-back positions. In the meantime, Axel Disasi will have to compete with Levi Colwill and Thiago Silva for a place in the centre-back position. Similarly, Robert Sanchez and Kepa Arrizabalaga will compete for a place under the goalposts.
- Nicolas Jackson could make his debut in the final third against the Reds alongside Mykhaylo Mudryk and Raheem Sterling who will be playing in either side of the flanks. Additionally, Carney Chukwuemeka, Conor Gallagher, and Enzo Fernandez could start in the midfield.

- Similar to Chelsea, the Reds have two injury concerns ahead of their opening match. Stefan Bajcetic is suffering from an adductor injury and Thiago Alcantara is suffering from a hip issue. Both midfielders are yet to recover and will be missing the match against Chelsea.
- Trent Alexander-Arnold will be taking the position as an inverted full-back. In the meantime, Andrew Robertson, Ibrahima Konate, and new captain Virgil van Dijk will be taking up the rest of the positions in the defense line.
- New arrivals Dominik Szoboszlai and Alexis Mac Allister have adapted to life with the Reds. They could make their competitive debut in this match, while Harvey Elliot and Curtis Jones will compete for the other remaining position alongside them in the midfield.
- Ace Mohamed Salah started another season’s preparations with 2 goals and 7 assists in their 5 pre-season games. The star Egyptian will start on the right side in the final third. In the meantime, Luis Diaz, Darwin Nunez, Diogo Jota, and Cody Gakpo will all compete for the rest of the two positions in the front line alongside Salah.
