Diversity! WPL, Women’s World Cup top trends in sports events on Google in 2023

In a major boost for diversity in sports, the Women’s Premier League (WPL) and the Women’s World Cup were ranked high among the top-trending sports events on Google in 2023. Both tournaments appeared in the top ten trending searches in India in terms of sports events. The latest findings published by Google indicate a rising interest in women’s cricket, thereby deviating from the mainstream men’s cricket team which has always been the at the center of attention.

“The first-ever Women’s Premier League (WPL), along with the Women’s Cricket World Cup, ranked high in sports events”, Google’s blog post read.

Gill, Rachin pip Kohli, Rohit to be top-trending on Google in 2023

It seems like 2023 is a year for the youngsters as young Shubman Gill and Rachin Ravindra emerged as the top-trending cricketers, both locally and globally.

Both Shubman Gill and Rachin Ravindra have had a spectacular run in 2024 so far, and continued their form in the World Cup 2023 as well. Surprisingly, the two young stars have left behind stalwarts Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma to become the most trending players on Google.

Some of the cricketers who feature on the list of top-trending search in 2023 in terms of players include the following.

  • Rachin Ravindra
  • Mohammed Shami
  • Glenn Maxwell
  • Suryakumar Yadav
  • Travis Head

Meanwhile, Team India was ranked as the top-trending cricket team worldwide and was the only cricket team to find a spot as a part of the global sports teams list. Queries related to the World Cup 2023 and the India vs Australia finals were at an all-time high. The top-four trending searches in terms of sports events are as follows:

  • Indian Premier League (IPL)
  • Cricket World Cup
  • Asia Cup
  • Women’s Premier League
