ENG vs SA, World Cup 2023: After shock losses, South Africa England look for comeback; LIVE streaming and more

Both England and South Africa are reeling from demoralising losses at the Cricket World Cup. Defending champions England were beaten by Afghanistan while South Africa crashed to Netherlands. Despite that, South Africa hold the upper hand with England faltering at the other end.

South Africa scored 428/5 against Sri Lanka and got things off the mark in incredible fashion. They followed it up with a comprehensive win over Australia and things looked to be on the up. That came crashing down versus Netherlands mid-way into the contest.

Similarly, England caved under the Afghan pressure to collapse in Delhi. This came after they had been beaten by New Zealand in the tournament opener and salvaged two points in between. Rashid Khan and Mujeeb Ur Rahman picked three wickets each and England were left in tatters.

South Africa are still better off than England coming into this fixture at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. England are struggling in all departments. England have been largely rusty and inconsistent despite boasting of a strong squad on paper. Ben Stokes is expected to return to the side after declaring himself fit. He had missed the first three games due to a hip injury.

Focus will also be on Jos Buttler who has mustered just 43, 20 and 9 in the three matches. This despite holding plenty of experience of Indian pitches and conditions having played the IPL for many years now. Of equal concern is Liam Livingstone’s form who has produced 20, 0 and 10.

At the other end, Joe Root and Dawid Malan have been the best batters for England. Root scored two fifties and Malan a century from the three matches. But more would be required against a strong South Africa bowling lineup.

For South Africa, just when they started to look like they had their World Cup woes behind, Netherlands waltzed in. Quinton de Kock struck back-to-back centuries before coming undone versus the Dutch. Aiden Markram and Rassie van der Dussen, who scored centuries against Sri Lanka, are also in-form and will be vital to the comeback plans.

South African bowlers have been collective in their efforts. Kagiso Rabada’s (seven wickets) brilliance and Marco Jansen’s (six wickets) variation can pose problems for the batters but more will be needed from Lungi Ngidi (four wickets).

Squads:

England: Jos Buttler (c & wk)), Moeen Ali, Gus Atkinson, Jonny Bairstow (wk), Sam Curran, Liam Livingstone, Dawid Malan, Adil Rashid, Joe Root, Harry Brook, Ben Stokes, Reece Topley, David Willey, Mark Wood and Chris Woakes.

South Africa: Temba Bavuma (c), Gerald Coetzee, Quinton de Kock (wk), Reeza Hendricks, Marco Jansen, Heinrich Klaasen (wk), Keshav Maharaj, Aiden Markram, David Miller, Lungi Ngidi, Andile Phehlukwayo, Kagiso Rabada, Tabraiz Shamsi, Rassie van der Dussen and Lizaad Williams.
