The 68th match of the 2023 Indian Premier League (IPL) saw the clash between Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and Lucknow Super Giants (LSG), at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata, on Saturday, May 20. LSG registered a narrow one-run against KKR and booked their spot in the IPL 2023 playoffs. 

Nitish Rana, the KKR captain, won the toss and invited LSG to bat first. LSG got off to a bad start as their top order collapsed in front of KKR's bowling attack. However, the visitors managed to score more than 60 runs in the powerplay.

When the top and middle order collapsed, the wicketkeeper-batter, Nicholas Pooran, led the charge for LSG and scored 58 off 30 deliveries as LSG posted 176 runs in 20 overs. For KKR, Vaibhav Arora, Shardul Thakur, and Sunil Narine while Harshit Rana and Varun Chakravarthy made one scalp each. 

LSG beat KKR in a thriller to book their playoffs spot

KKR made some changes in their playing XI, with Venkatesh Iyer (24 off 15) coming out to open the batting with Jason Roy (45 off 28). Both KKR openers produced a flying start for the home side, while Krishnappa Gowtham provided a massive breakthrough for LSG, dismissing Iyer. However, KKR managed to score 61 runs in the power play. 

KKR middle order have struggled with the bat, but their rising star Rinku Singh played a terrific knock to steady the KKR innings. He scored an unbeaten 67 off 33 deliveries including six fours and four sixes but KKR suffered a one-run defeat against the visitors. For LSG, Ravi Bishnoi and Impact Player, Yash Thakur, grabbed two wickets while Gowtham and skipper Krunal Pandya picked one each.
