In the past 16 editions of the Indian Premier League, several players have underperformed for the franchise. Ben Stokes

The Chennai Super Kings spent ₹16.25 crore on the English Test skipper, but all they got was 15 runs in 2 matches and an 18-run over. It was baffling to see the franchise give a million dollars to an injury-prone all-rounder who has made it clear that he values Tests over T20s.

Krishnappa Gowtham

In the IPL 2021 auction, CSK surprised everyone with their buy. They bought Karnataka’s Krishnappa Gowtham for 9.25 crore as an all-rounder. Interestingly, Gowtham did not play a single match of the season. He was subsequently let go in the next season.

Andrew Flintoff

The most expensive buy in 2009 did not work for the Chennai Super Kings. Andrew Flintoff played just three matches in his short-lived CSK and IPL careers. The English all-rounder managed to score just 62 runs and take 2 wickets.

Scott Styris

The veteran Kiwi all-rounder was with CSK for two seasons. He got ₹92 lakh in 2011 and ₹1.05 crore in 2012 but failed to prove his worth. Styris played just 2 matches, scoring 5 runs and taking no wickets in 2011, and did not even feature for the franchise in the 2012 season.

Kedar Jadhav

Kedar Jadhav secured his largest-ever IPL deal when CSK paid 7.8 crore to hire him in the 2018 mega-auction. CSK saw in him a middle-order batsman with the ability to bowl off-spin occasionally. Kedar scored 248 runs at 20.55 while striking the ball at 96.49 and getting zero wickets in 23 matches.
