IPL 2024 Auction: Indian Premier League trophy unveiled in Dubai ahead of big event

The Indian Premier League (IPL) auction is all set to take place in Dubai on Tuesday, December 19. This year’s auction marks the first edition of the event taking place outside India in the history of the IPL. Overall, 333 players are set to go under the hammer at the auction this time. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is understood to have originally received 1,166 applications for the auction and eventually retained around a quarter of those players in the shortlist.

Ahead of this year’s auction, the prestigious IPL trophy was unveiled in Dubai on Sunday evening. IPL’s social media handle shared a video showcasing the uncovering of the prized trophy.

“Welcome to Dubai! We are all set for the IPL Auction. The trophy in all its glory,” read the caption of the post.

The IPL 2024 auction will take place at the Coca-Cola Arena in Dubai. The Auction is scheduled to start at 1:30 PM IST.

“Out of 333 players, 214 are Indians and 119 are overseas players of which 2 players are from associate nations. The total capped players are 116, uncapped players are 215 and 2 from associate nations. A maximum of 77 slots are now available with up to 30 being slotted for overseas players,” read a statement shared by IPL.

Overall, 77 slots are available for the 10 teams. Out of the remaining slots, 30 are allotted for overseas cricketers. Players set to be auctioned are divided into three categories – Indian capped, Indian uncapped and overseas players. The sets have then been further categorised based on their roles – batters, all-rounders, wicketkeeper-batters, fast bowlers and spinners.

Two-time IPL champions Kolkata Knight Riders have the most number of vacant slots at 12. IPL 2022 winners Gujarat Titans, on the other hand, have the highest amount of money available in their purse among the franchises with INR 38.15 crore. The Gujarat-based franchise recently decided to trade their former skipper and star India all-rounder Hardik Pandya to Mumbai Indians.
