IPL 2024: Match 33, PBKS vs MI IPL Records & Stats at Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Cricket Stadium, Mullanpur

1 week ago 91

Match no. 33 of the IPL 2024 will be the fourth match this year at the Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Cricket Stadium in Mullanpur, which has been the new adopted home for Punjab Kings (PBKS).

This match will see the eighth placed Punjab Kings host the seventh placed Mumbai Indians. Currently, both teams have two wins from six matches and the net run rate (NRR) is all that separates them.

In their last match, PBKS fought very well before eventually failing to defend 147 against Rajasthan Royals at Mullanpur. The venue has not exactly been a happy hunting ground for the Kings, who have lost two out of the three matches they've played here.

MI's two-match win streak at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai was halted by Chennai Super Kings, who defended 206 despite a dazzling century by Rohit Sharma. MI will be bolstered by the former skipper's new lease of form and hope that they can get back to winning ways.

Both teams will be looking for their third win and look to get a better position on the points table.

Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Cricket Stadium Pitch Report:

Just 3 matches have been held at this stadium, so it is difficult to fully make out how exactly the pitch will behave, but in the last three matches, the indication has been of a very low scoring surface even by this season's lofty standards. If this keeps up, even MI's explosive batting might not be fully able to go slam bang.

IPL Stats and Records at Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Cricket Stadium, Mullanpur:

In 3 matches here, 2 have been won by the teams chasing and Punjab Kings got very close against SRH losing by just 2 runs. The average first innings score in these three matches has been 168 which may look high over the history of the IPL, but is definitely very low for this season.

PBKS vs MI Strategies and Match-ups:

It is very telling when all three captains decide to field first, and it pays dividends. Two matches have been won chasing and the one that wasn't, only fell short by two runs. So chasing certainly has its merits on this ground and with MI's explosive batting, they will certainly be looking at the chance to chase. The important match ups for this contest are: Suryakumar Yadav vs Sam Curran, Rohit Sharma vs Kagiso Rabada, Jasprit Bumrah vs Liam Livingstone, Jasprit Bumrah vs Shashank Singh.

Player Battles to Watch Out For:

Rohit Sharma vs Kagiso Rabada:

In the IPL, the star Mumbai batter Rohit Sharma has scored 37 runs in 25 balls at a strike rate of 148 against the ace pacer of the Proteas. Rabada has dismissed him twice in this time with an average of 18.5. The powerplay will be crucial in this battle.

Sam Curran vs Jasprit Bumrah:

Jasprit Bumrah

Sam Curran has scored 18 runs in 12 balls at a strike rate of 150 against Bumrah, but has an average of only 6 as he has been dismissed twice. The English all-rounder has been making small but useful contributions with the bat, so MI will look to their talisman to keep him in check, and Jasprit Bumrah will be the wrecker-in-chief to do so.

X-Factors for PBKS vs MI:

Punjab Kings:

Their most consistent batsman has been Shashank Singh, whose services will once again be required against Bumrah and co. PBKS will hope that he can come very good especially at the death and take them over the line.

Mumbai Indians:

When MI chased 197 runs in less than 16 overs, the Player of the Match was Jasprit Bumrah because of his fifer that had restricted RCB to only 196. Such has been the impact of that man and the amount of carrying he has had to do in this Mumbai Indians attack. He will once again be vital if MI have to stop Shashank and Ashutosh Sharma.
