IPL 2024 Playing Conditions: After Smart Replay, BCCI to trial new rules for bowlers

BCCI is making a hoard of changes as we head into the 17th season of the Indian Premier League. After bringing in the Smart Replay System in IPL 2024, the cricket board have made some notable changes in the bowling rules.

Two bouncers:

The upcoming IPL 2024 season will see a significant shift in playing conditions, with bowlers now permitted to deliver two bouncers per over, a departure from the previous allowance of only one short ball.

The BCCI introduced this rule earlier this year in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy (SMAT), and it has now been extended to the IPL 2024. In contrast to T20 Internationals, where only one short ball is allowed, Test matches and One Day Internationals (ODIs) permit two bouncers.

Two referrals:

Another notable playing condition retained by the BCCI is the allowance for teams to have two referrals during matches. Additionally, teams will retain the ability to review wides and no balls, a rule introduced last year.

BCCI will uphold the practice of examining for a catch concurrently with a referral made for stumping. Ordinarily, stumping decisions are assessed through the on-field umpire’s referral. This rule deviation from ICC standards is rooted in the BCCI’s stance that neglecting to inspect for a catch before a stumping would disadvantage the fielding team.

No stop clock:

However, one change from the ICC playing conditions that will not be implemented in the IPL is the stop clock rule, which has been made permanent in white-ball international games.

As per the rule, the fielding team will be allotted 60 seconds between overs, within which they must start the subsequent over before the countdown expires. This 60-second interval will be observed between each over in a T20I with penalties imposed for any violation.
