The Board of Control for Cricket in India has come hard on the commentator’s posting pictures and videos of live games in the Indian Premier League 2024. The move comes after a recent incident involving a former India batter. The commentator posted a picture of him from the stadium during a live game and breached a clause of broadcasting rights of IPL’s partners Star Sports and Viacom18 media.
The BCCI official, who was in charge of looking over matters as such, promptly asked the former player to take down the post. Another commentator who was involved in a similar attempt garnered over a million views on his live game post. An IPL team was fined INR 9 lakh for the social media post. The BCCI has now rolled out strict actions for any breach of broadcasting rules by players, commentators, and IPL team owners.

“The broadcasters have paid big money for IPL rights. So, commentators cannot post videos or photographs on match day on social media. There have been instances where commentators have done an ‘Instagram Live’ or posted a photo from the ground. One video got one million views. Even IPL teams can’t post videos of live games. They can post a limited number of photographs and can give live match updates on their social media platforms. If found guilty, a franchise will be fined,” a BCCI official said as quoted by Indian Express.
Players are told to tone down their live game exposure on social media
In order to ensure that everyone adheres to the rules, the BCCI has assigned specific staff members to monitor all content posted by commentators, IPL teams, players and other officials present at the IPL matches. According to the BCCI official, some players had posted pictures during a match day, which they were subsequently asked to remove.

“Even players have been told to be mindful of social media posts on match days. All posts by players are being monitored. They had been informed of the rules but we found that some of them have not followed it,” the official added.
