The boundaries, meanwhile, have dried up for the Indians thanks to the flurry of wickets, with India having not collected a single one for 33 balls now since Rohit’s back-to-back reverse sweeps off Leach. India can’t afford to go into a shell here and allow the Englishmen to build more pressure on them. They need to take a leaf out of Ollie Pope’s playbook and attack sooner rather than later.

Axar gets off the mark with a single off Leach in his fourth delivery. Stokes, meanwhile, brings off-spinner Root back into the attack to counter the left-handed batter. And Root nearly knocks over the off pole after Axar decides to shoulder his arms to a ball that holds its line, and narrowly misses the off stump. Challenges his outside edge again a couple of deliveries later, this time with a delivery that turns away sharply. Root starts his new spell with a maiden. Another 30 minutes left for tea, and one more wicket at this stage should make this England’s game to lose.

Bairstow’s kneeling at 2nd slip at the moment, hoping to snaffle the ball that comes at a low height off the outside edge. FOUR! Rohit continues to build pressure and decides to take on England’s attacking field with a reverse sweep behind square that is placed wide of the slip cordon. Repeats the shot in the very next delivery, and to a similar result. Rehan, standing at backward point, isn’t able to cut the ball off on either occasion. Expensive over for Leach, the left-arm spinner going for 10 in his third over after conceding just a single in his first two. Hartley bowls with a relatively spread out field to Rohit in the next over, with fielders placed at square and long leg and a lone slip. He takes Rohit by surprise with one that stays a touch lower than usual. Later appeals successfully for LBW against the Indian skipper with one that holds its line and raps Rohit on the pad bang in front of middle. Rohit goes for the review, more out of hope, and ends up burning it by getting three reds. India have now lost a third wicket in this session — all of them to one bowler in the same spell. Axar Patel walks out at No 5 with India hoping to counter the English charge with a left-right combination.

Maiden for Leach in his second over of the day. He doesn’t appear to be having too many issues bowling at the moment, and should be able to provide some support to Hartley and Root. Hartley, meanwhile, has a silly point standing behind the popping crease, somewhat closer to the slip cordon. The visitors are maintaining pressure on the Indians with close-in fielders. FOUR! Rohit brings up the fifty for the hosts with a sweep behind square off a fuller delivery from Hartley that’s pitched around middle and leg. A welcome boundary for the Indians.

Meanwhile, someone at the stadium — probably a member of the ‘Barmy Army’ — is blaring the West Indies’ ‘Rally’ anthem on a trumpet in celebration of one of the greatest Test matches ever witnessed. In case you missed it, West Indies just pulled off a shock for the ages at Australia’s fortress of Gabba, defeating them by 8 runs in the Day-Night Test with pacer Shamar Joseph bowling his side to victory with figures of 7/68!

Massive over from Tom Hartley, the debutant getting rid of both Jaiswal and Gill in a space of three deliveries — both getting caught by Pope right at short-leg/silly point. The left-arm spinner did get hit for a boundary at the start of the over by Jaiswal, but he responds in style. Rohit’s looking a frustrated at the moment.

OUT! What a turn of events in Hyderabad as Tom Hartley strikes twice in a space of three deliveries, this time getting rid of Shubman Gill for a two-ball duck! It's also a second catch for Pope standing close to the batter, this time at silly point! Gill was guilty of defending with hard hands, resulting in a deflection that resulted in the ball coming to Pope at a catchable height. India in deep, deep trouble now! IND 42/2
