RCB head coach Andy Flower gets endorsement to replace Brendon McCullum as England’s Test coach

Brendon McCullum has stepped down from the position of England men’s cricket team’s head coach in Test cricket. The former New Zealand wicketkeeper-batter assumed the role in May 2022, and after a little over 4 years, McCullum was pushed to leave by the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB).

We’ll get into why the Kiwi was told to focus on just white-ball cricket some other day. Right now, the focus is on who replaces him. The ECB has 5 weeks to decide that. On August 19, England will face Pakistan at Leeds. That’s not an awful lot of time. Perhaps assistant coach Marcus Trescothick can take over McCullum’s role on an interim basis for the Pakistan series.

But the ECB needs a proper solution, aka a full-time Test coach. Former England captain Nasser Hussain believes current Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) head coach Andy Flower will be the perfect man to replace McCullum.

“If you’re going to keep Rob Key – whose attention to detail is not his strongest suit – then below, you need to have someone that is absolutely across everything and doesn’t miss a trick,” Hussain told Sky Sports News.

For the unversed, Flower worked for the ECB for 9 years. He started as an assistant coach in 2007 and was promoted to team director in the summer of 2009. He assumed that position alongside the head coach until 2014. During his 5-year period, England won three Ashes series, one away (2010/11) and two at home (2009 and 2013).

He led England to their first ICC World Cup title, the T20 World Cup, in 2010. Flower took the Test side to number one in 2011 and was awarded the BBC’s Coach of the Year. He stepped down in 2014, but the ECB felt they needed him. So, they decided to use him to lay a strong foundation for the future and made him the technical director of elite coaching and head coach for the England Lions (England A). He finally decided to leave the ECB in 2016 and hasn’t returned since. But Hussain hopes Rob Key brings him back.

“For me, the best person for that would be Andy Flower by a country mile. He took England to number one in the world. I love his approach to coaching – he was meticulous in everything that he did. That’s what’s been lacking in this England Test match side. I would do anything if I were Rob Key and the ECB to go and get Andy Flower,” he added.
