Rohit Sharma shatters multiple records with valiant hundred at Rajkot

Rohit Sharma is now the oldest Indian captain to score a Test hundred as he broke multiple record during his century at Rajkot.

Rohit Sharma struck a valiant 131 on Day 1 of the Rajkot Test after England reduced India to 33/3 and led the home team’s recovery with a 204-run partnership with Ravindra Jadeja. Rohit, who on Wednesday was confirmed as India’s captain for T20 World Cup 2024, celebrated the announcement with a fighting century which brought India back into the match after early setbacks.

England pacer Mark Wood made fiery start to the third Test, removing Yashasvi Jasiwal and Shubman gill, while Tom Hartley removed Rajat Patidar as India lost three wicket inside the first nine overs of the match. Rohit then took control of the innings and started the rebuild work with Jadeja, eventually reaching his hundred in 157 deliveries.

He got out in the last session of the day as Wood got him caught at mid-wicket on 131 off 196 balls. The India skipper smashed 14 fours and three sixes during his stay at the crease and broke multiple records.

At 36 years and 291 days, Rohit is now the oldest Indian captain to score a Test hundred. He overtook Vijay Hazare’s record of scoring a century at 36 years and 278 days against England in 1951.

His second six allowed Rohit (79) to become the second-highest six-hitter for India after Virender Sehwag (91). He surpassed MS Dhoni (78) on Thursday.

Also, Rohit now has most sixes for an Indian captain across all formats with 212 maximums. In this also he overtook Dhoni (211). Only Eoin Morgan (233) has hit more sixes than Rohit in international cricket among captains.

The Mumbai batter also surpassed Sourav Ganguly (18,575) to become India’s fourth-highest run-scorer in international cricket. Rohit now has 18,641 runs to his name and is only behind Sachin Tendulkar (24,208), Virat Kohli (26,733) and Rahul Dravid (24,208).

Rohit now has 42 centuries in international cricket as an opener. He has equalled Chris Gayle and is only behind David Warner (49) and Sachin Tendulkar (45).
