Rohit Sharma to lose more weight before India’s next ODI series, confirms Abhishek Nayar

By the end of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025, many questioned Rohit Sharma over his fitness. As harsh as it might sound, the Indian star wasn’t in the best of shapes and even played the entire tournament as an ‘impact sub’. His batting form also deteriorated and the future looked bleak. But then came a change in mindset. Focus and desire to prove everyone wrong, and perhaps to push his international career for a better final chapter.

How Nayar helped Rohit Sharma get fitter

We are now witnessing a fresher version of Rohit, who apparently lost 11 kilograms in the lead up to his much-awaited return in the blues of India. Working alongside his best friend and newly named head coach of KKR, Abhishek Nayar, Rohit worked extremely hard on his fitness. There were no doubts on the batting talent he possesses but some extra layers of fat were something Rohit would’ve done without. This led to an extreme workout schedule that saw Rohit skip his favourite meal and have 700-800 repetitions for every body part, and also a bodybuilder phase.

The result clearly showed. Rohit looked five years younger! He was almost unrecognisable when he was clicked by paps after months of anticipation. In the recently concluded India vs Australia series, Rohit turned out to be the best player, winning the Player of the Series award after smashing his 50th international century for India. He fielded for 50 overs in all the three games and didn’t look exhausted even after forging a 168-run stand alongside fellow partner Virat Kohli.

Rohit Sharma to continue transformation

Fascinatingly, Rohit isn’t going to stop here. Despite announcing his return in style, he will go an extra mile and would preach the newly found personality with aplomb. As per Nayar, fans should not be surprised if Rohit loses a few more kilos before the next series he features in. Now, Rohit and Kohli will be on a 36-day break before they turn up for the three-match ODI series against South Africa at home. Both the legends showed their hunger to sustain their spots in the format, with their one eye stuck at the ODI World Cup 2027.

Rohit Sharma will be a relieved man on his flight back to India. He gave up his favourite meal and the results are visible. The next series is in a month’s time and don’t be surprised if he loses a few more kilos by then,” Abhishek Nayar said while speaking to JioHotstar. Nayar is part of the commentary panel for the India vs Australia white-ball series, with five T20Is coming up soon.
