Big things were expected from Shubman Gill in the India vs Australia ODI series, his first series as India’s 50-over captain. Although his Test exploits aren’t poor by any means, Gill has been on just another level in one-day cricket. Prior to the Down Under tour, he was averaging 59.04 in the format.
But all didn’t go as planned. Unlike his debut as India’s Test captain, where he scored 774 runs at 75.40, Gill managed to amass just 43 runs at 14.33 in Australia. What exactly went wrong? According to Mohammed Kaif and Krishnamachari Srikkanth, Gill has too much on his plate.
Is Shubman Gill mentally tired?
Kaif talked about how becoming India’s captain in two formats has put strain on Gill. Add the Gujarat Titans leadership as well, and things get even tougher. Mind you, Gill might be planning for the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 auction at the moment. Kaif thinks Gill might be mentally fatigued with all of this happening.
“He has played a lot of matches lately. He has to open the batting and also captain the team in multiple formats. Then, there is the IPL captaincy as well. With the auction coming up, there will be calls with the Gujarat Titans for planning. There is a lot on his plate at once, and it seemed like it had affected his batting a bit. He looked mentally tired,” Kaif said on his YouTube channel.
Rohit Sharma & Yashasvi Jaiswal’s role in failure
Srikkanth agrees with Kaif that Gill might be under pressure. He thinks that, since the England tour, Gill wants to lead from the front when it comes to performance and, therefore, is expecting too much of himself. Rohit Sharma outperformed him during these games, which isn’t a great look either since he replaced him as India’s ODI captain.
“After performing in England, probably he is also putting pressure on himself. He shouldn’t do that and just play his game. He actually played well today, but just got a superb delivery from Hazlewood. More than Shubman Gill getting himself out, it was a wicket-taking delivery that got him. But he does look to be under pressure, just observing his body language, because he has replaced Rohit Sharma as the captain while also opening alongside him,” Srikkanth said on his YouTube channel.
The former chief selector pointed out that people have been questioning Yashasvi Jaiswal’s exclusion from not just the ODI but the T20I team as well. Since Gill was picked over Jaiswal in the shorter format and didn’t have the best of times in the Asia Cup, it might just be something going around in the back of his mind.
“And on the other side, everyone is asking why Yashasvi Jaiswal isn’t playing. All that adds to his pressure. But he’ll get over it, as he’s a fantastic player. He should just play his normal game because he’s getting his strides and shots right. He’s just getting out; that’s the only thing. So once he produces a couple of big knocks at home against South Africa, he’ll be set again,” Srikkanth added.
