Rajasthan Royals (RR) team manager Romi Bhinder has been served a show-cause notice by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) for using a mobile phone in the team’s dugout during the game against RCB last week. As per the Indian Premier League (IPL) Players and Match Officials Area (PMOA) rules, team managers are allowed to carry phones but are strictly prohibited from using them during the game. While sources claimed that a health scare was the reason behind the RR team manager using the phone, the BCCI has launched a probe and has now sought a response from the official.
BCCI serves notice to RR manager over usage of mobile phone
As per Cricbuzz, a show-cause notice has been served by the BCCI to RR team manager Romi Bhinder, who has been a part of the franchise nearly since the start of the IPL. BCCI’s Anti-Corruption and Security Unit (ACSU) has sought a response from the team official within 48 hours. On Sunday, BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia said that the board had already begun the process of determining whether the RR manager had violated any protocol or regulation under our existing IPL rules and regulations.
The incident occurred during the 11th over of RR’s chase. Bhinder, seated in the dugout, was scrolling on his phone while Vaibhav Suryavanshi, sitting next to him, appeared to glance at the screen.
“First of all, I would like to say that having the mobile with him is permissible under the regulations because he is the manager. So, managers and doctors are allowed to carry a mobile in the PMOA. That is number one. Second, whether he has violated any protocol or regulations under our existing IPL rules and regulations. We are trying to verify it, and we have started the process,” Saikia told Hindustan Times Digital.
“So, if anything is found to be negative, we will take action. Otherwise, having the mobile with him, there is no violation of any other regulations. That is my stand at the first stage. But we are trying to find out whether he is carrying the mobile in the designated area or beyond that. That we are trying to find out. The exercise has already started,” he added.
