Injury isn’t leaving Sarfaraz Khan’s side. In the last 12 months, the 28-year-old has been dealing with setback after setback. It all began in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) 2024-25, where he sustained a minor rib fracture. This ruled him out for the second leg of the Ranji Trophy 2024-25.
Sarfaraz Khan in the form of his life
After failure of selection for the England Test tour, Sarfaraz worked on his fitness. He lost a whopping 17 kilograms. However, before the 2025-26 domestic season could start, Sarfaraz sustained a quadriceps injury while playing in the Buchi Babu Tournament. He missed out on the Duleep Trophy, and it affected his chances of selection for India A and the Test team.
Sarfaraz bounced back. He struck his maiden T20 hundred and landed an Indian Premier League (IPL) contract with the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) after a blockbuster performance in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy (SMAT) 2025-26. Sarfaraz brought this form into the Vijay Hazare Trophy 2025-26.
Injury has other ideas
A half-century against Uttarakhand was followed by a record-breaking hundred, his highest List A score of 157, against Goa. All was going well. Until another injury setback. According to the Times of India, Sarfaraz wasn’t benched or tested but injured for Mumbai’s fixture against Maharashtra on January 3.
Sarfaraz has been taken for an MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) scan. Depending on the severity of the injury, he either miss just the Vijay Hazare Trophy (VHT) 2025-26 or the entire second leg of Ranji Trophy 2025-26. Recovery from a quad injury takes about 1-2 weeks for mild strains (Grade 1) to several months for severe tears (Grade 3 or tendon ruptures).
Mumbai will face Himachal Pradesh on January 6, where Shreyas Iyer, Shivam Dube, and Suryakumar Yadav are expected to play. Their final group stage match will be against Punjab on January 8.
