Shocking claim by Ponting ahead of WTC Final

Shubman Gill has become a big batting name in the country after his performances over the past several months. In the Indian Premier League 2023, the right-handed batter scored 890 runs and took home the Orange Cap. He will take on Australian bowlers in the ICC World Test Championship Final at The Oval. Former Australia captain Ricky Ponting predicted that Gill will be crucial in India’s showdown with the Aussie quicks.

“He looks like a terrific young guy,” Ponting told ICC. “He’s got that bit of attitude about him as well. He’s got a bit of swagger. He has some serious class.”

“That sort of front foot pull shot that he plays against the fast bowlers will be a shot that he’ll probably need against this Australian attack,” he added.

In Gill’s brief career, turning his starts into something big has always been difficult, but in the past six months or so, he has made enormous strides in that direction. A testament to this is the fact that he has scored hundreds in all three forms, including a world record double hundred in ODIs, three hundreds in IPL 2023, and the second-most runs (890) in a single season. As India have another chance to win the WTC, there will be a lot more pressure on Gill.

Gill will undoubtedly bat open the batting in the WTC championship game alongside skipper Rohit Sharma. The majority of India’s batting lineup from the summit match from the previous iteration will remain, but Gill will have a lot more on his plate to handle Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc, and Josh Hazlewood.

On Thursday, the right-hander participated in his first practise with the Indian players. Due to their involvement in the IPL 2023 final, Gill Mohammed Shami, and Ravindra Jadeja arrived late to the squad. Gill will be trying to win his first significant trophy in Indian colours next week after his incredible season with the bat failed to lead the reigning champion Gujarat Titans to a second straight championship.
