Still ‘no decision’ by ICC regarding regulation of growing number of T20 leagues

Again no decision was made about the regulation of the expanding number of Twenty20 leagues during the Tuesday meeting of the International Cricket Council (ICC) Chief Executives Committee (CEC) in Durban.

Full member boards have in the past asserted that these T20 leagues are driving talent away from the nations that make up their membership. It is acknowledged that the conversation on this divisive topic will go further on.

There is a need to control the T20 leagues, according to Cricbuzz sources in Durban, but the exact nature of regulation will be decided upon at the board meeting.

With multi-tournament contracts already being offered to select players, the possibility of Indian Premier League (IPL) teams being the major employers of foreign cricketers over their national boards is getting closer.

The owners of the Mumbai Indians (MI) and Delhi Capitals (DC) have each acquired teams in new T20 leagues in South Africa, the United Arab Emirates, and the United States. Eight of the IPL’s ten franchises have at least one team in another league abroad.

National teams are occasionally forced to take a backseat because of the expanding number of T20 leagues that provide attractive contracts to the greatest players in the sport. Due to schedule conflicts, West Indies has battled for years to field its best players.

As national boards try to match the multi-league contracts provided to its great players by private club owners, the situation is only set to become worse.

The fact that the IPL’s franchises bought all six clubs in the lucrative T20 tournament in South Africa last year was a glaring sign of the league’s growing influence.

According to the website Cricinfo, preliminary discussions have already started with players from Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, West Indies and other countries. The Indian corporations now want their best international talents to represent them in several competitions.
