The 68th game of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023 featured a clash between the two-time champions Kolkata Knight Riders and the Krunal Pandya-led Lucknow Super Giants at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata on Saturday, May 20.

It was a special occasion for Lucknow Super Giants as the Krunal Pandya-led side donned new colours. Wearing maroon and green, Lucknow paid special tribute to ATK Mohun Bagan FC in their clash against Kolkata. Paying a fitting tribute to one of the oldest football clubs in the world, Lucknow also made their way into the knockout stages of the tournament after defeating Kolkata by one run.

Rinku Singh and Jason Roy’s knocks brought the two-time champions within touching distance of a win. However, Yash Thakur’s final over hindered the run chase for Kolkata, propelling Lucknow to the playoffs.

Disrespecting the National Club of India and hurting the sentiment of our supporters: Dutta

However, the tribute was halted when Kolkata Knight Riders’ management reportedly denied entry to some fans who were wearing the jersey of the football club. Reflecting upon the same, Mohun Bagan general secretary Debashish Dutta came forward and lambasted the management of the two-time champions for denying entry.

"It was a special match for the supporters of Mohun Bagan because LSG was wearing a new Green and Maroon Jersey, But, the KKR management curtailed the freedom of the Mohun Bagan supporters (who are also fans of KKR and LSG) by not allowing them to enter the stadium as they were wearing the jersey of Mohun Bagan," Debashish Dutta said in a release.

"Mohun Bagan Athletic Club strongly condemns this decision of KKR management or disrespecting the National Club of India and hurting the sentiment of our supporters, it is an individual's right to support and wear the jersey of the team which he/she loves and supports. No one has the right to interfere in one's own choice," Dutta concluded.

Kolkata Knight Riders are yet to respond to the statement made by the Mohun Bagan official, but a response could be expected in the coming days.
