Tilak Varma named India A captain, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi earns ODI call-up

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has named India A’s squad for the ODI tri-series against Afghanistan A and Sri Lanka A in Dambulla, Sri Lanka. Less than 10 days after the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 season ends, India A will be in action. Tilak Varma has retained his spot as India A captain, having led against South Africa A last year.

Vaibhav Sooryavanshi earns India A ODI call-up

Riyan Parag has been promoted to vice-captain since Ruturaj Gaikwad has become part of the senior team. Injured Khaleel Ahmed misses out as Gujarat Titans’ Arshad Khan replaces him. Other fast bowlers, Yash Thakur, Yudhvir Singh, and Anshul Kamboj, come into the team with Harshit Rana injured and Prasidh Krishna and Arshdeep Singh managing their workloads and focusing on senior cricket.

The main point of discussion is Vaibhav Sooryavanshi’s inclusion. The 15-year-old had made his India A debut last year in the Asia Cup Rising Stars. However, this is his maiden unofficial ODI call-up. Ishan Kishan and Abhishek Sharma were part of the South Africa A series and haven’t been included. Therefore, Sooryavanshi and Priyansh Arya come in for them. Suryansh Shedge and Harsh Dubey are two other new entrants.

India A to red-ball matches

India A will also play 4-day games in Galle against Sri Lanka A after the tri-series ends. The fixtures for that will be announced later since India is to play Afghanistan in a one-off Test from June 6 to 10 in Punjab. “India A will also play two multi-day matches against Sri Lanka A, with the squad for the red-ball fixtures to be announced at a later date,” the BCCI said.
