Blow to Vaibhav Suryavanshi as Bihar doesn’t even have selectors to name Ranji Trophy squad

2 hours ago 13

Just days before Bihar’s Ranji Trophy campaign is scheduled to begin, the state finds itself in a shocking predicament. Three slots on the senior selection panel remain vacant, and with only two selectors in place, the Bihar Cricket Association (BCA) has no full team ready for selection. This awful situation has put promising talents like Vaibhav Suryavanshi in limbo too.

Bihar Cricket Association’s failure before Ranji

According to BCA officials, the association has formally requested BCCI approval to fill the three vacant positions. Neeraj Singh, General Manager (Admin) of BCA, said that although the process is nearing completion after a general meeting on September 29, time is short.

Extensive discussions were held between Sept 29-Oct 7 on all relevant issues, including the selector vacancies. BCCI is expected to announce the provisional appointment of selectors within the next 2-3 days,” said Neeraj Singh, as per the Times of India. Meanwhile, very few candidates applied for the vacant roles, which has only added to the urgency of the situation given the new domestic season starts from October 15 onwards.

Vaibhav Suryavanshi’s rise & what this delay means for him

Vaibhav Suryavanshi has been one of the brightest young names in Indian youth cricket. In October 2024, he scored a blazing 104 off 62 balls on his India Under-19 debut against Australia, the fastest Test century by any Indian at that level. Just recently, in England and Australia, he has delivered superb knocks, beying his age.

Playing for India Under-19 at the age of 14, the Rajasthan Royals (RR) prodigy has hammered centuries in England and Australia. In 5 Youth ODIs vs England, he mustered 355 runs at 71.00 and at an unreal strike rate of 174.02. Talk about domination. And everyone knows about his impeccable century at IPL 2025. He is the youngest-ever player to hit a hundred in T20 and Indian Premier League (IPL) history. At the age of 14, Suryavanshi scored a 35-ball hundred against the Gujarat Titans (GT).

For Suryavanshi, participating in the Ranji Trophy could be extremely crucial. Well, Suryavanshi has already made his debut in the Ranji Trophy. He did that while he was just 12 years and 284 days old. It’s a vital stepping stone to red-ball maturity, from youth cricket to competing in the tough domestic arena. But with no selectors in place, Bihar may risk delaying his game time or putting him in uncertain waiting.
