Rohit Sharma was back to his old self. After looking rusty in Perth, the former India captain returned to form in Adelaide. Although the Men in Blue didn’t end up winning the second ODI against Australia, there were a few positives. The biggest of which was Rohit looking like himself.
Rohit Sharma roars back
Playing his first ODI series since the Champions Trophy, there were questions over Rohit’s form. In between, he had retired from Test cricket. Then there were concerns over his future concerning the ODI World Cup 2027. Chairman of Selectors Ajit Agarkar didn’t confirm him or Virat Kohli for the ICC event.
Amid all of this, Rohit has top-scored for India in Adelaide. His 73-run knock was the reason why the match went to the 97th over. Otherwise, the visitors may not have even scored 200 runs. India were 17/2 and from there, Rohit and Shreyas Iyer pulled their home out of the hole to post 264.
Could’ve scored big, says Gill
India’s new ODI captain, Shubman Gill, was all praise for Rohit, as he was playing competitive cricket for the first time since the Indian Premier League (IPL) ended in early June. He highlighted how the pitch was doing the tricks, but Rohit fought hard and managed to continue.
However, Gill also said that Rohit could have scored a big hundred. Having scored 3 double hundreds in ODIs, Rohit knows about making his knock count, and Gill thinks his opening partner might have just missed on a big score in Adelaide.
“It’s never easy coming back and playing some competitive cricket after a long time. The initial phase was challenging, but he fought hard. I would say he missed out on a really big one,” Gill said in the post-match interview.
