You’d expect a team to be almost flawless when they reach to three Indian Premier League (IPL) finals in a span of five years. It is a no mean feat. But with Gujarat Titans (GT) you always have those apprehensions. It is simply because they rely so heavily on their top three of Shubman Gill, Sai Sudharsan and Jos Buttler.
When the trio don’t sparkle, the team loses. That’s what we saw in the IPL 2026 final as well, where the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) mauled them first with the ball and then a Virat Kohli special sealed the deal. Nonetheless, Jason Holder’s acquisition, Kagiso Rabada and Mohammed Siraj’s bowling partnership and Washington Sundar’s rise were some huge pluses for GT.
However, there still remain some players that GT should look to ouster. In this article, we take a look at some of those players whom the Titans don’t need going ahead into the IPL 2027.
Players who should be released by GT
Rahul Tewatia
This might not happen but GT needs to move forward from Rahul Tewatia. He surely had his incredible moments in the league, taking his side to wins on multiple occasions. But those came in the early GT days. Season by season, his stocks are falling. He doesn’t bowl at all. The six-hitting capabilities have become quite monotonous, with him always shuffling to the fourth stump and swivelling towards mid-wicket region.
Since 2024, Tewatia has made 477 runs at an average of 21.68. But that average is above 20 only because he has 14 not outs to his name. Playing only as a finisher, Tewatia’s strike rate of 149.06 isn’t scary. This season, he did score a fifty but that’s it. He amassed 190 runs at a SR of 143.93 in IPL 2026. GT can find a better finisher in the market by releasing Tewatia, who earns INR 4 crore per year.
Shahrukh Khan
Similar to Tewatia, Shahrukh Khan also makes the list. He was on the list last year as well. And that’s the kind of tenure he is having with GT. Once regarded as a gem and powerhouse of a finisher, Shahrukh has never managed to arrive. He has been tried at different positions but hasn’t found success.
Despite earning almost INR 40 crore through IPL salaries in his career, Shahrukh hasn’t amassed a 200-run season ever. For GT, this year, he batted five times but went on to score a paltry 43 runs at SR of 130.3. That makes a simple decision for GT.
Luke Wood, Jayant Yadav, Kulwant Khejroliya, Anuj Rawat
Can be considered as deadstock, GT can free up some money by getting rid of some squad names. Luke Wood was a backup overseas pacer but didn’t find any game time. GT loves having a left-arm pace option in the team always but Wood may be past his prime.
Kulwant Khejroliya came in as a replacement player and surprisingly got a chance to play directly at Qualifier 1. He was put to test against an impeccable RCB batting lineup. With GT showing immense trust in Arshad Khan and also having the likes of Gurnoor Brar and Ashok Sharma, GT don’t necessarily need another pacer.
Meanwhile, Jayant Yadav and Ishant Sharma are basically in the team to nurture young players with their immense experience. However, GT can get rid of one of them. Jayant could be that pick. Similarly, Anuj Rawat hasn’t got a chance, with the franchise giving a couple of chances to Kumar Kushagra.
