The selection committee, headed by Ajit Agarkar, will convene on June 6 and announce India’s squad for the away tours of Ireland and England. Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma’s availability and fitness seem to be the talking point for the ODI leg, but it’s the T20I selections that are more intriguing.
Shreyas Iyer, India’s new T20I captain
Everyone’s convinced that the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has decided to drop Suryakumar Yadav and name Shreyas Iyer as India’s new T20I captain. There are other players whose names have popped up as Suryakumar’s potential replacement, but Shreyas has seemingly edged them all.
India debut for Vaibhav Sooryavanshi
The Ireland tour will serve as preparation for England. After a gruelling 1-month-long T20 World Cup 2026, a 2-month-long Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026, and the Afghanistan series, some players like Mohammed Siraj, Hardik Pandya, and Jasprit Bumrah are expected to be rested. Siraj is currently getting ready to play the India vs Afghanistan one-off Test; Bumrah has been rested, and Pandya is at the Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru.
Others like Abhishek Sharma, Arshdeep Singh, and Tilak Varma are immediate starters and aren’t fighting for their positions. Arshdeep was managing his body during IPL 2026, while Tilak will be leading India A in Sri Lanka soon. The three might be told to sit out as others have a go.

None of them have played T20Is for India yet and will be making their debuts. There’s a lot of talk about whether Sooryavanshi should play for India at 15. But we all know it’s coming sooner rather than later. A smaller tour like Ireland seems like the right call to ease him into international cricket.
Predicted India T20I squad for Ireland & England
For Ireland: Shreyas Iyer (c), Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, Rajat Patidar, Sanju Samson, Shivam Dube, Ishan Kishan, Nitish Kumar Reddy, Varun Chakaravarthy, Kuldeep Yadav, Axar Patel, Washington Sundar, Rinku Singh, Prince Yadav, Prasidh Krishna, Mohsin Khan
Out: Suryakumar Yadav, Mohammed Siraj, Hardik Pandya, Jasprit Bumrah, Abhishek Sharma, Arshdeep Singh, Tilak Varma
For England: Shreyas Iyer (c), Abhishek Sharma, Tilak Varma, Sanju Samson, Shivam Dube, Ishan Kishan, Nitish Kumar Reddy, Hardik Pandya, Varun Chakaravarthy, Kuldeep Yadav, Axar Patel, Washington Sundar, Rinku Singh, Prince Yadav, Arshdeep Singh
Out: Suryakumar Yadav, Mohammed Siraj, Jasprit Bumrah
Full strength for England
However, some of these players will have to go out for the England tour. Mohsin Khan or Prasidh Krishna can’t play ahead of Arshdeep Singh. Pandya might return as well, and Nitish Kumar Reddy won’t be dropped, as he’s the understudy to Pandya. Sooryavanshi will get a taste of international cricket and then go back to playing for India A or domestic cricket.
Patidar will go for Tilak, who the selectors and management rate very highly. There was even discussion about him replacing Suryakumar as captain. He’ll be in Sri Lanka for India A until June 17 at the minimum, and if India qualify for the tri-series final, then June 21. Resting him for Ireland makes sense, but not England.
