The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) has announced the England cricket team’s squad for the upcoming 5-match T20I series against India, which commences on July 1 in Durham. There aren’t any sweeping changes for England from their last T20I assignment, the T20 World Cup 2026, with only Brydon Carse and Jamie Overton unavailable due to injury.
Maiden call-up for James Cole
The 17-member team includes James Coles, who became the most expensive buy, £390,000, at the inaugural Men’s The Hundred auction by London Spirit in March. The all-rounder bats right-handed and bowls left-handed and is the youngest ever debutant for Sussex, at 16 years and 157 days, in first-class cricket.
The 22-year-old has already played 61 T20 matches. Coles has scored 1373 runs with a strike rate of 146.37 and has 53 wickets at an economy of 8.27. Cole recently featured for the England Lions and for the Sunrisers Eastern Cape in the 2025-26 season of the SA20.
“James Coles is an exciting addition and has earned his place following his performances with the England Lions and in T20 competitions here and abroad during the past 12 months. We have selected a larger squad to accommodate the fact that this series will begin shortly after the Test series against New Zealand is due to conclude, which allows us to be flexible,” said England Men’s National Selector Marcus North.
Jordan Cox, Sonny Baker and Saqib Mahmood return to England’s T20I side in the absence of Carse and Overton. Neither was part of the Three Lions’ semifinal run at the T20 World Cup. Phil Salt, who injured himself during the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 season, will play his first match since April 18.
