Mohammed Shami has opened up about his non-selection in Team India’s squad for the Asia Cup. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) had announced a 15-member squad along with 5 reserves on August 19, but Shami wasn’t part of either.
The pacer is a known performer in ICC events. In the 2023 ODI World Cup, Shami took 24 wickets in 7 innings, while he was India’s joint-highest wicket-taker in the 2025 Champions Trophy. But the selector didn’t think a spot was warranted for him.
Shami, fit for Asia Cup
Some assumed that Shami perhaps wasn’t completed fit for the Asia Cup. But the pacer will play in the Duleep Trophy, starting August 28. The veteran fast bowler pointed this out, he’s available for all tournaments. But selection isn’t in his hands.
“I don’t blame anyone for non-selection or complain about it. If I’m right for the team, select me; if I’m not, then I have no issues with it. Selectors have the responsibility to do what’s best for Team India. I have a belief in my abilities that if and when I’m granted an opportunity, I’ll give my best. I’m working hard. If I can play the Duleep Trophy, then why won’t I be able to play T20 cricket?” Shami told News24 Sports.
No hopes for India comeback
As things stand, Shami isn’t confirmed to represent India in any format. Yes, he took 9 wickets in 5 matches at the Champions Trophy but never looked near the 2023 level he showed. His performance in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025, 6 wickets at 56.16 and 11.23 economy, was below average.
The selectors didn’t select him for India’s Test tour of England either, as his body wasn’t ready. Shami doesn’t have high hopes either. He says it’s entirely up to the selectors. If they feel he can perform, they’ll pick him. Shami confirmed that he’s cleared all fitness tests.
“Right now, I don’t have any hope (about my international return). If they play me, I’ll try to perform and give my 100%. Whether they play me or not, that’s not in my hands. If I’m playing the Duleep Trophy, 5-day cricket, I’m available for all formats. I was called to Bengaluru, and I have cleared the fitness test (Bronco), and now I’m ready to go back,” Shami added.
