Tickets for the Indian Premier League (IPL) matches are set to be more expensive following the government’s Goods and Services Tax (GST) reforms. The cash-rich league has been placed in the luxury activity category along with tobacco products and betting services. The highly-anticipated IPL season runs from March to May in the course of which 74 games are played across the country.
Fans now have to pay more for IPL tickets
As per the Finance Ministry’s GST reforms announced, the government has increased the GST from 28% to 40% for IPL tickets. It is pertinent to point out that the GST rate remains 18% for other cricket matches, hinting that the reform will only impact the IPL. Fans will now have to factor in the hiked GST rate on IPL tickets in addition to the pricing offered by various venues and the online booking fees. This of course in addition to the exorbitant rates at which tickets are sold in black.
