Ravichandran Ashwin has retired from the Indian Premier League (IPL). The off-spinner has retired as the fifth-highest wicket-taker in the leagues with 187 wickets in 221 matches. In his 18-year-long career, Ashwin accomplished everything he could. From being part of two IPL trophy wins to leading a team, he did it all. Today, we look back at his illustrious career.
IPL teams Ashwin played for IPL teams
- Chennai Super Kings (2009-15 and 2025)
- Rising Pune Supergiant (2016-17)
- Punjab Kings (2017-18)
- Delhi Capitals (2020-21)
- Rajasthan Royals (2022-24)
Captaincy
Ashwin led PBKS for two seasons, 2018 and 2019, but had poor results. He won just 12 out of 28 matches as captain. The 2018 season wasn’t great, as PBKS finished second last, 7th, with just 6 wins from 14 matches. 2019 wasn’t much better, as Punjab finished 6th but won just 6 matches again. He was then traded to DC, which was the end of his captaincy tenure in the IPL.
Controversies
- In 2019, as PBKS captain, Ashwin mankaded Jos Buttler. He received flak for going against the spirit of the game. Ashwin stood by his decision. Buttler’s England teammate shredded his image for the act, and several others criticised him as well.
- Become the first batter to retire out in the IPL after failing to get going in a match against Lucknow Super Giants in the 2022 season. RR went on to score 30 runs with 10 balls left after he retired out.
- His CSK return in IPL 2025 didn’t go well. He got backlash for discussing the team’s performance on his YouTube channel in the middle of the season. CSK head coach Stephen Fleming was asked about it, and Ashwin refrained from discussing CSK-related matters for the remainder of the season.
- After the season ended, Ashwin opened a can of worms when he said CSK paid Dewald Brevis under the table to acquire him as an injury replacement. CSK again had to put out a statement defending themselves.
