Will MS Dhoni ever become India’s head coach? His former India teammate doesn’t think so

It’s unanimously agreed that MS Dhoni has one of the sharpest cricket minds. His field placement, ability to read the batter’s mind, and mastery behind the stumps make him stand apart. Till now, Dhoni’s the only captain to win the ODI & T20 World Cup and the Champions Trophy.

Apart from his international exploits, Dhoni’s also won the Indian Premier League (IPL) trophy five times as captain. Everyone who’s played under him has emerged as a better player. It would be safe to assume that Dhoni would be equally good as a coach.

As of now, Dhoni hasn’t retired from cricket. He continues to play for Chennai Super Kings (CSK), but we don’t know how long his body will stand the test of time. For all we know, he might have already played in the IPL for the last time.

Why MS Dhoni won’t become India’s head coach

So, when it does step away, will Dhoni consider becoming India’s head coach? His former India teammate Aakash Chopra doesn’t think that Dhoni will take up coaching. He thinks it’s against the great captain’s style.

“That is a big one. I don’t think he is interested. Coaching is a difficult job. Coaching keeps you as busy as you were when playing, and sometimes even more than that. You have a family, and you say that you have done the same thing your entire life, you have lived your life out of a suitcase, and you don’t want to do that job now,” Aakash said on his YouTube channel.

Since Dhoni is committed to CSK, we might see him in the dugout during IPL in the years to come. But Aakash doesn’t think that Dhoni will invest 10 months a year to coach the Indian team.

“That is why a lot of players don’t get into coaching, and even if they do, it’s a two-month IPL stint. However, if you become a full-time Indian head coach, it’s a commitment of 10 months a year. I don’t know whether Dhoni would have that much time. I will be amazed if he has that much time,” he added.
